Dynamic Speed Limit System
Truc_Ha - Thu Dec 9 8:19:19 2004
Problem: We have speed limits, but almost no one obeys them, not even traffic police.
Analysis: Perhaps we ignore them because more often than not they are ridiculous. If they took into account variables affecting the safety of driving, and also changed as those variables changed, perhaps they would be obeyed. If they were more reasonable, police could also reasonably ticket everyone who went over the limit even by a mile.
Proposal: Develop and design a cheap way for cities to dynamically change all speed limit signs. The system should be able to take into account local conditions such as weather, traffic volume, obstructions, congestion, lighting, and human input (such as shutting down certain areas in the event of a nearby spill/disaster/etc).

This proposal makes a , I believe false, assumption about the purpose of traffic laws: That they are meant to be efficient and ensure safety. The actual purposes are:
(1) reduce liability in accidents
(2) generate municipal revenue
(3) criminalize ordinary citizens.

Traffic control is done primarily with posted speeds and traffic lights that hopefully are timed to allow for the best flow of traffic at different times of the day and night. If automobiles had on-board systems that informed the driver in real time of all of the current conditions and the driver was responsible for using that info., that sounds like the future. In the meantime, we live with civil and traffic laws that are made for the worst offenders. like idiots that see children everywhere and do'nt use the common sense they have to figure out there's probably a school nearby and should slow down to a crawl because children are unpredictabe. So without the school zone signs and reminders of heavy fines, the idiots that are in control of a 2 ton weapon drag race through a school zone. And most traffic laws are made for idiots. It's too bad we are all surrounded by idiots that seem to dictate the laws that the rest of us that do use common sense have to live with. Technology in comercial travel seems to be evolving, why not personal commuters, I think it's a matter of responsibility and the variables in what it would take to force all the idiots to act responsible.--Jim 03:39, 13 June 2006 (PDT)
