How does one describe a piece of art to someone who has not yet seen it?
You can start by describing the medium with words such as "glass", or "poetry", or "digital photograph". From there one can use a narrative description about the history, ideology, or context of the piece. One can also use category-type words such as "mystery" or "Impressionist" or "science-fiction" to give a potential viewer a means of relating the piece to their own tastes and background, giving them more information upon which to base their decision whether or not to interact with the piece. da Vinci Concept, through tools in our chosen software, MediaWiki, allows inventors and collaborators to use both methods to label their work.[edit]
An Inventor Can:
- Describe what type of work that you have composed using descriptive language on the same page or parent page to the work.
- Utilize as many category tags as appropriate to describe your work.
[edit]
Describing your work contributes to the structure of da Vinci Concept
Unlike other wikis, we are encouraging members to create whatever categories they deem appropriate to describe their work. This allows for complex and dynamic interactions, as through the category tags, readers can move from one work to another following the descriptive tags contributors have labeled their work with. Thus, we encourage all members to add tags to the bottom of each page of work and contributing to both the da Vinci Concept structure, and also to the reading and viewing experience of the website.

Quick How-To
- How do I use categories? To add an article or work to a category, just put the name of the category in doubled square brackets on the page you posted your work on, like this: [[Category:Your category here]].
- Repeat the above to label your work with as many categories as it fits into. For example, post, 2004 Presidential Election Results and Cartographic Visualization might warrant: [[Category:Politics]][[Category:Data Visualization]].
- To create sub-category, write a tag to it, such as [[Category:Ethics]], and save. Click on the link to the sub-genre's page. Add a link to the parent genre, which is [[Category:Philosophy]] in this case.
- To write a link to a category page, add a colon in front of "Category" like this: [[:Category:Your category here]]. Otherwise, you piece will be tagged as belonging to the category.

Guidelines
- Use the search box and view the complete category list at Special:Categories to see if your category already exists.
- da Vinci Concept categories generally fit into two types: project or topic. After labeling your work with the appropriate categories, further organize any new categories you may have created by adding either a link to [[Category:Project]] or [[Category:Topic]] to the new category page. The adminstrative staff thanks you.
