Caveats of the copyright

Without my conventional and unwieldy exposition, I would like to pose the following question;
What are the most problematic shortfalls of current copyright laws?
(i.e. Do they protect? Do they stifle? What aspects are necessary and which need modification? How should we repair / rework copyright laws? Do we need to? Are they an improvement over the past or a regression?)
